ADHD Explained: Recognizing Symptoms and Navigating Today’s Tech-Driven World

Our new world of technology has become a symbol of power, where we have comfort and advantages in every aspect of our life. Therefore, our life has become easy, especially with access to all kinds of information from Google Devtha (chat gpt, AI apps etc.). There’s a saying ‘Knowledge is power.’ So, every tiny information which is easily accessible and within the reach of our fingers, has made us powerful.

But we cannot deny the universal truth as well – that the good and the bad go hand in hand. For example, everyone is now leaning upon shortcuts to achieve goals, whether it is to become a doctor, engineer, psychologist or any other profession. AI apps like Chat GPT are helping out in doing the assignments, giving the answers without having to rack your brains or slog to find the right answers by reading volumes and volumes of books.

These AI Apps instantly process large information and provide the required answers without any need for human efforts to process the information. That is, people have gotten into the habit of immediate gratification, with its easy availability, rather than put in efforts for true human connection. I’m discussing this here as it is a crucial preamble before I speak on the real topic, i.e. ADHD.

ADHD is a kind of childhood psychiatric condition, where attention is not a problem but sustaining attention is difficult for a while more than the usual or average time. It doesn’t mean the person can’t be focus on anything. Attention is an initial and basic cognitive process this can be influenced by any disturbance around the person or inside the person (psychologically). Preoccupations, mood fluctuations, or any other event can also distract our attention.

Technically speaking, diagnosing any kind of psychological disorders, not just ADHD, needs some criteria in addition to the clinical examinations along with necessary psychiatric & psychological assessments. The other symptom of ADHD which is restlessness, also has varied reasons; just one symptom of uneasiness is not sufficient to diagnose a patient as Hyperactive.

The basic symptoms of ADHD are related to two categories: one is inattention and second is hyperactivity and impulsivity.

Basic & common symptoms of ADHD are as under:

  • Difficulty in sustaining attention
  • Difficulty in paying attention to the task or
  • Difficulty in finishing the task in set time
  • Difficulty in organizing task & activities or mental effort
  • Easily Distracted
  • High impulsive behavior
  • Difficulty in sitting in one place for long/ difficulty in remaining seated when its expected
  • Fidgets with hands or feet or restless body
  • Excessive running/climbing or indulging in other physical activities when expected to remain seated
  • High emotional or temperamental state of mind & body

The present lifestyle of this tech savvy world that live virtually more than living in reality, greatly contributes to enhancing the problems of ADHD patients. The teens nowadays like to discuss their problems with Chat GPT rather than their parents and friends. People are getting more and more disconnected from the real world and are finding happiness in the virtual world.

Nothing is wrong in this kind of life-style. But this is also a reality that we are a living entity, having skills and potential to solve our life problems, coping with relationship issues or learning literature. Therefore, need to strike a balance in life.
